Technical rescue refers to a rescue or recovery that employs the use of tools and skills that exceed those normally reserved for fire fighting, medical emergency, and rescue. Technical rescue operations are covered under the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1670 and 1006, and under 29 CFR 1910.146 and 29 CFR 1910.147. Due to the unique nature of technical rescue, there is specialized equipment necessary to safely conduct operations.
The Billerica Fire Department Special Operations Response Team (SORT) maintains equipment for:
- Confined Space Rescue
- Trench Rescue
- Structural Collapse Rescue
- Rope Rescue (High Angle & Low Angle)
- Water Rescue (Ice & Surface)
